Night Blooming Cereus

Sorry I have been MIA, but LIFE kept getting in my way.  First off I had major
computer problems. Had to buy a new computer and what do I do with that one-
Yep I somehow got a virus in it.  Our computer guy said I had 841 threats. Good
news he got it all worked out. That is why I hate to go online and download
something that was safe which evidently my virus protection that came with
the computer did not pick up. So as soon as I got it back I went out and bought
Norton virus protection and downloaded it to my computer.

A friend of mine gave me these plants about two years ago and I waited
that long for it to have blooms.  These only bloom one time and it blooms
late at night. When I saw that I had two blooms I was thrilled. I was determined
that I would get up and see it open and take these pictures.  Went to bed and told my
husband if he woke up during the night to wake me up but  I woke up before him
at 12:30 and grab my camera and hoped that it did open. Mind you I am not one
to go out in my yard late at night because I am afraid of might be lurking around
like snakes or other little creatures. But I went any way. Both flowers had bloomed.
Took pictures and went back to bed and my husband woke up about 2:00 and woke
me up to go take pictures of flowers. Told him I did that at 12:30. Went back to sleep
and got up again at 4:30 and both flowers were dead. They only bloom for a couple of hours
late at night and if you miss it well you miss it .But I was so glad I was able to get
these pictures. Hopefully they will bloom again sometime. Maybe not this year
but next.

Thanks for visiting my blog and have a great day

  1. I'm with you totally on being out at night & coming upon a 'critter'. Hate those things! You got some terrific pictures of this rare bloom. When we lived in So Fla, we had friends who had one of these plants, which twined around a palm tree base. It had the most delicious fragrance, but you surely had to be fast to see it. Good for you that it finally bloomed and you were able to record it! Glad you didn't have any unpleasant surprises when you went out to take pictures! TFS & Happy Sunday (oh yes, good luck with the new computer).

  2. Wow you have patients…not for getting up to take the photo, but to care so long for a plant and have it live, lol….mine would have probably died.
Great luck that you got that photo though.

  4. Sorry you got all those virus Marilyn, I hate downloading things too, and even when you try to be very careful you can still get virus. It's frustrating to say the least! I use Norton too and I had just gotten a new computer when you guessed it, I got a virus! I did a live chat with one of Norton's people and he took over my computer and got rid of the virus! I was so happy because like I said, my computer was brand new. They are awesome and I love their anti virus software. OMGosh, I so glad you got these pictures! The flower is just beautiful! You did great at getting the pictures. I go out all the time at night time, but you are right, you never know what is lurking about. lol I know we have coyotes that come up by the house, our son came home from work late one night and when he pulled in his lights hit on a coyote in our field beside the driveway. He ran off of course, as they are as scare of us as we are them. lol But our worse critter was a bear that came out of our corn field one Memorial Day weekend! He was a young bear and wasn't in the least bit scare of it or bothered with us. We watched and followed him all over taking pictures. lol You just don't see bears walking out of your corn field everyday! Glad you got to enjoy the flower before it die, shame they don't last longer. There is another flower that you can watch bloom at dusk, It looks like a weed though, but I love watching the blooms open in slow motion! Have no clue what it is called though. Hugs, Brenda
